The Body Knows First
We keep trying to fix a body problem with a mind solution.
You cannot think your way back to alive.
I’ve tried. I suspect you have too.
Aliveness shows up in the body before it shows up anywhere else. This is not mysticism. It’s mechanics. The nervous system knows the answer before the cortex builds the case. By the time you’re “thinking about whether you’re okay,” your body has been holding the verdict for weeks.
The modern script is backwards. We try to fix a body problem with a mind solution. We read one more book. We build one more plan. We have one more conversation about what we should do. Meanwhile, the body keeps sending the same signal we keep ignoring.
The move isn’t a workout program. It isn’t a wellness regimen. It isn’t eight hours of sleep, though that wouldn’t hurt.
The move is to return to the body as a source of information.
Walk without a podcast. Make something with your hands - a meal, garden bed, a repair, some art. Sit outside long enough that your shoulders drop without you asking them to. Notice the tension in your jaw. Notice how you’re breathing.
I’m not asking you to meditate. I’m asking you to listen to the instrument you’ve been playing - without modifying it.
The poet David Whyte writes about the body as the place where the soul’s work begins. Not the mind. Not the spreadsheet. Not the five-year plan. The body.
Your body has been trying to tell you something for a long time. This week, let it.
